This Weeks Speaker - Nina Vallins

 Coordinator: NinaVallins   www.projectrespect.org.au 

Project Respect is a non-profit community-based organisation that aims to empower and support women in the sex industry, including women trafficked to Australia.  Established in 1998 they conduct
Outreach work:
 Visits to brothels in Victoria, holistic support and individual counselling - particularly in City of Port Phillip
 Referrals and information regarding services for health, housing, the law, child custody, domestic violence, drug and alcohol and other issues
 Emergency accommodation and ongoing support for women who have been trafficked
 Support for education and alternative employment pathways.

Complementing direct outreach services Project Respect also takes a key role in lobbying the Australian government, advocating for clients to community groups, as well as public education. 

They are committed to global solutions to the problem of violence against women in the sex industry, and work closely with women in the industry to support them to advocate for themselves and other women.

Last Weeks Speaker

The Cancer Council Victoria - Leading The Fight  http://www.cancervic.org.au/

Last Wednesday at our meeting Natalie Livsey, from the Cancer Council Vic gave a presentation on the statistics of cancer and how cancer can affect us. Natalie handed out detailed information and informed on how to cut your cancer risk.

Main factors were -

Check for unusual changes and have regular screening tests.

Maintain a Healthy Weight. Limit Alcohol. Eat a Healthy Diet.

Be physically active. Be Sun Smart. Quit Smoking.

   

Natalie was most interesting and we would like to thank her very much for her time and presentation.

Relay for Life   -  1st and 2nd of May.

Members please note - Liz De Nittis requires all Registration forms for the Relay for Life completed and handed to her with the $15.00 this coming Wednesday at the latest. Liz will have additional registration forms and be on hand to answer any of your questions.

The club is looking for as many members as possible to participate this year. Liz can offer tax receipts as per usual.  (Members are then asked to wear their club t-shirt and they will receive a souvenior long sleeve shirt to keep from CCV).

 

BBQ - We are still in need of Volunteers for the Lunchtime and Dinner BBQ for the Saturday only (1st May) Relay for Life.

Please can you let Liz De Nittis know if you are able to attend. BBQ hours are 11am to 2pm on the Sat Lunchtime and 5pm to 8pm for the Dinner BBQ. (there is a break between 6.30-7pm for the candlelite ceremony).

The Rotary Club of Albert Park Book Store


The Rotary Club of Albert Park now has its own Book Store.

It is located at the Galilee School Building, Parish of Sts Peter & Paul, Cnr Park & Monatague Streets, South Melbourne (at the back of the church). Currently it is open each Saturday 10:00am to 2:00pm.

Note:  Sorters are also there at various times throughout the week but please arrange with one of the contacts below.

Members are constantly picking up books from donation bins left at various local library's, and also from calls from individual households and organisations.  They then work hard to sort, catagorise and price for sale.

Hundreds and hundreds of secondhand books are on show and available for sale.

District Assembly

All Rotarians are invited to the Rotary International District 9800 Assembly to be held on

Sunday 16 May, 2010; from 9-00 am start to 1-00 pm finish.

We will be providing a substantial morning tea and fellowship opportunity during the Assembly.

For the very first time this will be held at Melbourne Grammar School, Domain Rd, South Yarra, which is easy to find and easy parking.

Community Meals

For some years now Rotary Club of Albert Park Rotarian Paul Flakus has attended Community Meals regularly on Saturday's often picking up meals, donated each week from Walters Wine Bar, (these are freshly cooked foods to feed the disadvantaged persons). He also ensures  pick up of donated fruits from Fruits on Coventry, donated bread from Bakers Delight South Melbourne and attends to having  milk, tea and coffee available. 

Paul also organisers a roster for our members to provide a small amount of their time once every 6 months to provide a friendly environment with a good meal for people living in our area who cope less well with life.

Community meals is held at St Luke's Church, Dorcas Street, (next to Coles Supermarket) South Melbourne.  
Should your name not be on the roster please contact Paul so he can arrange a suitable time for you to assist.

Well done Paul,  you are doing a great job.
